What happens when Max Verstappen, driving the championship-winning Red Bull RB7,
competes against a host of British icons?
British icons with a twist, that is…
The main competition in this race was our Spitfire plane, flown by Boultbee’s Matt Jones. With top speeds of 400mph, almost double the top speed of the RB7 F1 car, the spitfire was a worthy adversary on the straights.
Around the bends? Not so much - which is why we decided to spice things up a bit for the Red Bull team by adding some additional rivals to the track. While racing to beat an icon of British aviation, they would also have to navigate against the challenges of a London double-decker bus, a Transit van, a black cab, a festival-ready VW Polo, and a boy racer behind the wheel of Ford Focus ST.
After successfully surpassing the various trials on the track, this race culminated in a photo finish to close to call.
Red Bull Racing CEO and Team Principal, Christian Horner, said that his personal ‘winner’ from the race “has got to be the Spitfire – the sound, the grace it has in the air, it is fantastic to see”.
For me, this project was a true "pinch me" moment from start to finish.
